Net Age Web Design and Maintenance
Net Age Logo E-commerce is the ability for your web site to sell goods or services online. There are two main ways to implement e-commerce:

  • Securely take credit card, contact and ship to details within your own web site
  • Shell out to a site that specialises in e-commerce (from a "buy now" or "shopping cart" link) so that the transaction is consumated externally to your web site.
Depending on your budget and needs either may be a suitable solution. The implications for each method are:

e-commerce internal (within) your web site Securely take credit card, contact and ship to details WITHIN your own web site:
  • Requires you obtain an Internet Merchant Facility to accept & process VISA, MasterCard & Bankcard online:
    • NAB: 1300 767 548 - www.nab.com.au
    • St George: 02 9952 0989 - www.stgeorge.com.au
    • ANZ: 1300 366 988 (option 2) - www.anz.com.au
    • CBA: 1800 730 554 (option 1) - www.cba.com.au
    • Westpac: 1800 029 749 (option 2) - www.westpac.com.au

    • If you want to accept AMEX and Diners you will need seperate accounts with each organisation.
      • Diners Club: 1300 360 500 - www.dinersclub.com.au
      • AMEX: 1300 36 36 14 (option 4) - www.americanexpress.com.au
  • Requires you obtain a Secure Sockets Layer certificate from a company that issues such certificates - the most well known of these is Verisign
  • Optionally involve an Internet Payments Gateway (e.g. E-Way) provider to ease the flow of payments between your site and the Bank(s).
  • The costs involved for this option (in 2006) are :
    • about 3% per transaction to the Bank
    • about $800 per year to Verisign
    • about $1000 per year to the Internet Payments Gateway provider
e-commerce external to your web site Securely take credit card, contact and ship to details EXTERNAL to your own web site:
  • Requires no Internet Merchant Facility to accept & process VISA, MasterCard & Bankcard online as this is dealt with by the external agency
  • Requires no Secure Sockets Layer certificate as this is provided by the external site
  • Does require you set up an account with the external payments site
  • Does require you pay from 1.5% to 2.5% plus 30 cents a transaction to the external payments site
  • The costs involved for this option (in 2006) are :
    • 1.5% to 2.5% plus 30 cents a transaction

The bottom line The method that will be right for you will vary based on the number of sales you make:
  • More than 200 sales a month suggests you should implement e-commerce within your site
  • Less than 200 sales a month suggests you should implement e-commerce external to your site
  • You can always migrate from one method to the other method
Example Net Age has provided an example of e-commerce
