Net Age Web Design and Maintenance

Animation

Animation enhances a web site by drawing attention to a particular component of your message. For example "Hot Specials", a glistening logo, and "email us".

There is always an overhead (a delay in loading the the page) whenever animation is used. The most common example is the animated gif image. That is, an image constructed of a number of still frames and saved as a single file. When viewed on a web page the animation (ie the presentation of the sequence of still images) becomes apparent.

Like audio, animation should be used appropriately - not because it can be used but only if it will enhance the site in some meaningful way.

It should be used very sparingly (if at all) on most sites that have a corporate target audience. The audience is typically not interested in flying or moving graphics. They simply want the information and they want it with the least amount of fuss and delay.

The rule of thumb with animation is "if in doubt cut it out".
